“I love everything about this place,” says Monty, proud owner and captain of The Starboard and its Bar Crew. Starting out as a door guy in 1987 and working his way up through the ranks to become a bartender, his favorite Starboard memory happened 10 years ago, when he bought the place.

“Seeing how happy Chip Hearn was made me feel really great and a little nervous. We were so proud about how well we did in the first year, knowing we’d made the right decision.” Now Monty says his favorite thing is watching people have fun.

Off-season you might catch Monty golfing or cheering on his beloved Redskins while enjoying his favorite drink, a grapefruit crush, and noshing on a pepperoni pizza or some Bethany Blues’ pulled pork and brisket. His favorite movie is Eddie Murphy’s “Trading Places,” and best actor goes to “Harrison Ford – by a landslide.” Monty’s close personal friend and frequent Starboard guest Sandra Bullock gets his top actress spot and he gives “The Jetsons” a nod for favorite cartoon.

Returning to the realm of real people, Monty gives The Starboard’s patrons top billing. “They are the absolute most loyal and generous customers anyone could ever have. They love the staff and treat this place like their second home.”

Monty shares the patrons’ affection for the staff. “The bartenders, DJs and staff are the stars. I’m just the Keeper of The Keys!”

What is your favorite part of the off season? Why? The weather and the customers… April/May and September/October are beautiful down here… and all of the diehard customers that visit during those
months are awesome.  It’s a very relaxed atmosphere.

What is your favorite part about the summer season? Why? Well clearly the Money, but I also love our seasonal college staff.  Also the starboard is all hands on deck, running on full cylinders, which is nice compared to October when there are 4 of us doing everything!!!

Which past employee do you wish was still working here? It would be easier to answer which employees I’m glad DON’T work here anymore, because there are only a few. I miss everyone who has left!!  But if I had to narrow it down I’d say Brice, Creasey, and John D’souza.

What is your favorite part about working at the Starboard? It’s Just Fun. I get to hang out with some many interesting people and laugh all day. 

What is your favorite memory? There are so many crazy memories regarding the Starboard. Which makes it hard to single one out.  Between all the costumes/ outfits’ staff and customers create. To behind the scenes when new staff members initiation was to get dunked into freezing cold coolers filled with water and Rolling Rock bottles.  Or betting a co-worker (not mentioning names) that she could not fit inside her beer tub.  And she did. 

What do you like to do when you’re not at work? When I am not working at Starboard I am still work… I am also a Realtor for Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s in Rehoboth Beach. Which also keeps me busy.  But I do enjoy driving on the beach with my dogs and friends.  Always a great time. 

What is your favorite menu item? the chicken tenders and Scrapple sandwich. (So hard to decided.)

What is your favorite Starboard event? Running of the Bulls. How can you not love seeing two grown adults wearing a sweaty hot bull costume?  Along with hundreds of people dressed in red & white.  The Staff ‘s booze cruise is also a great event. Nothing like shot gunning beers.

What is your favorite part of the off season? Why? Favorite part about off-season is having time off.  Traveling, visiting friends and having time to myself. 

What is your favorite part of the summer season? Why? Favorite part of in season is the nice scooter weather and seeing all my friends.  I am lucky that many of my friends stop by and see me at work.  Have a cocktail or three and catch up with each other.

So hard to decide who is my favorite employee to work with is.  So I will say whom I do not work well with are Megan and DeeDee.  When ever you put the three of us together we are always in trouble for something, fighting over tables and who cleaned what.  Somehow intoxicated and I am always to blame.

There are so many past employees that I miss.  .  Judy was the best who kept us in line and set the standard.  While Timmy and the Irish Boys always made “Super Bowl” Mondays the best.  Dave Frederick always kept the techno music in the kitchen going. While somehow Jen was selling T-shirts, Jager and cleaning at the same time.  Junker, chubby, Feldman and Vickers were all “special” and always made me laugh.  Kimmie who made the worst shots and Julia who could sell anything.  The Tracey’s always made sure everyone was happy. And Mark & LA taught me to bartend.

The front if it read DAGS 2012. The back of it was a quote from the movie Cocktail , "The luck is gone, the brain is shot....but the liquor we still got!"  They spent all day hangin and drinking. We had a blast.

What is your favorite Starboard Event? Closing weekend because it’s also my birthday. 

Orange or Grapefruit crush? Depends on the season. Orange in the summer & grapefruit in the winter. Neither during holiday weekends haha.

What is your favorite part of the off season? Why? . Catching up with the locals and catching up on what I've missed the previous three months. 

What is your favorite part about the summer season? Why? It's all about the CHA CHING!

Where can one find you while you’re working? (What bar are you usually at?): Waiting tables during the day. Dining Room bar on Friday and Saturday nights.

What is your favorite part about working at the Starboard? Our awesome staff and all the crazy things that go on here during an average day. There is never a dull moment in this place.

What is your favorite memory? Our employee parties at Fagers’s Island or my very first night bartending for G-Love’s concert. Yikes…

What do you like to do when you’re not at work? Go to the beach and happy hour of course.  

What is your favorite menu item? It’s a toss-up between the Philly Pretzels and the chicken cheese steak with extra, extra jalapeños.

What is your shot of choice? Fireball, or an occasional bud heavy beer shooter.

What is your favorite Starboard Event? Opening Weekend because St. Patty’s Day has always been my favorite holiday and it's insane that weekend. Summer is almost back!

Orange or Grapefruit crush? Orange crush.

What is your favorite part of the off season? Why? Relaxing, beach bonfires, traveling and spending some quality time with friends and family. 

What is your favorite part about the summer season? Why? The money, the characters that hang out here, the weather and the fact that the beach is only a block away. Can’t beat jumping in the ocean after a very, very long shift.

Who is your favorite employee to work with? I can’t choose just one. Everyone has their own one-of-a-kind personality and sense of humor that it makes working with them so much fun, not to mention interesting!
