I know it comes a little early this year, but MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND has arrived. Dewey transforms overnight from a nice quiet beach town to the craziness/crowded little town that so many of you guys love! Since you will all be here within the next 36 hours...I want to fill you in on some of the things going on in town so you are prepared for the first major weekend (other than Starboard Opening of course!)

We started two nights ago with LauraLea on her regular Wednesday night tradition, the weekend continued Thursday night as many of you arrive in town a day early to get a head start. Always a very busy night at The Starboard, summer always starts right here on the Thursday night of Memorial Weekend!

Breakfast, Bloody's, Beer Pong, etc...We always get shocked at how crazy this Friday is, by 4pm, the place is wall to wall, and of course remains that way all night long. Smoky will be in by lunch time to DJ, then John Hardy in his 27th year will spin that night. Have your money ready for our Cover Charge...PSYCH! Of course there is NEVER a cover charge at your Starboard...but get here early as all of our entrances will have lines down the street early on Friday.

Ahhh...the real fun begins. You guys practically beat our staff to work! We double up all of our bars with staff, as you are always here in force all day long on Saturday daytimes. We have the MAVI TRIO live on the deck this afternoon from 2-6pm, then DJ Smoky that night. Even with many of our tables outside to handle the crowds inside, we still serve our FULL MENU all day/night so feel free to order all the food you need from our bartenders to keep up your steam!

ALWAYS......The Starboard's busiest day of the year. Almost a guarantee to be at full capacity in this place by 10AM!! Yes.....the lines wrap down the street early in the morning, as people make plans to get here at the crack of 9am to get this Traditional Ceremony we call Suicide Sunday underway. I have ordered over 2000 magnums of Champagne as we never seem to find a way to stock enough for all of you. We even have Koozies for the magnums of Champagne for you, so just ask!
Breakfast with ELVIS returns for yet another year....as our own ELVIS will make his rounds about 12 noon....then the full DOUG SEGREE band out of Annapolis will be on our back stage at 2pm...then Sunday night we welcome back our own LAURALEA & TRIPP FABULOUS on the inside stage promptly at 9:30pm. Our DJ's start at 9am each day....and run straight through till last call.

The finale of the weekend, we will serve most all of you breakfast, with a few grapefruit or mango crushes, bloody mary's, etc...to try and help revive you. Doug Segree will return to play out on our deck in the afternoon...and our DJ's will once again go from 9am till 1am, so you diehards have a place to keep the party rocking right here!

This past Sunday, we hosted the Seacrets radio Bloody Mary Contest, bringing in dozens of competing bars from both Ocean City and the Delaware beach area. We went down to Ocean City last year to compete, and brought the Maryland/Delaware Bloody Mary Championship right back here where it belongs, to The Starboard in Dewey Beach! Well...this year to no surprise...we beat out Galaxy 66 to keep the title right here at The Starboard. DJ Batman, Bulldog, and all from Seacrets were incredible, and we hope to keep the title right here again next year, so will invite all of our loyal patrons to keep us on top in the world of Bloody Mary's!
Please drive safely, and we will see you here in Dewey in a few short hours!!!
Remember, we will NEVER charge you a cover to come enjoy The Starboard...so don't waste silly dollars during this recession, just come on in The Starboard and have the time of your life!

| DEWEY BEACH NEWS |
Just a little Local Insight on what is going on here in Dewey so you don't get too upset on some changes here in town. With the economic slowdown, the town of Dewey Beach ran a deficit of over $800,000 last year. Since this town does not have property taxes, most all of its income is from businesses, fines, parking, and real estate transfer taxes. Well, when houses stop selling, transfer taxes stop coming in. That in addition to a ridiculous amount of high legal fees being driven by a few issues I will go into at another time, sent Dewey into a tail spin and ate up most of the reserve this town had for years.
So here is the bad news...the changes. Seasonal Parking permits were increased from $150 to $200 this year (Daily permits are now $15). Parking fines have increased from $35 to $50. I sit in on each council meeting, and trust me, the council spent months arguing over these increases, as NONE of them wanted to do this, however without a property tax, it was the quickest way to increase revenue to help the town recover and still provide lifeguards on our beaches and police in our neighborhoods. Both the Police and lifeguards have drastically cut their own budgets, along with other budget cuts made in town. Problem is, they truly want to be a resort friendly town, and appreciate our visitors, etc... but when left in such a huge hole, had to make drastic decisions to get money in so we can keep the town safe for everyone. So PLEASE be careful/smart/whatever when parking as I don't want to anyone make costly mistakes!
On the GOOD side...Dewey is currently undergoing a Beach Replenishment project...it was delayed so it still going on right this minute, and scheduled to be complete by early June. Therefore a few blocks each day are closed to public use while the sand is pumped onto the beach. Once done, our beaches will be not only beautiful, but HUGE! So bring back the volleyball nets, etc... and enjoy.
The Political climate is a little crazy, and all I can do is offer my views, as this year we have an election in September and the business community will have the candidates we recommend to help Dewey recover...so will probably have a sign up for you all that own property so we can atleast give you our views...for you to take your leave.
J-WALKING/LATE NIGHT NOISE - The chief of police has asked for us to help market two important things in town that will help make us all get along, and keep Dewey the way we all love it. For those of you that love to bolt across our busy Highway...please do your best to use the crosswalks. We are working together to try and educate people that we are located on a very busy highway, with people flying right through Dewey to get to Ocean City, etc...
Local residents have also met many times this winter pleading that they can live with the party atmosphere this town brings, the bars, etc... just ask that people as they walk home from the bars/parties please be considerate while in the neighborhoods during the late night hours. Screaming in the streets, etc... will only make local citizens want to change a culture that we all love so much, so please help pass the word in an effort to keep all of our neighbors happy and not awaking them at 3am in the moring! Ok, enough of the rules, I just like to explain now so you are all aware of the issues we face here in a town we all Love very much! | |
